Overview

Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of those trekking trails that offers an all-rounded journey and adventure in every nook and cranny of the trekking trail. From the lively villages to some of the most remote places with the majesty of cloud-kissed mountains, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the most walked trails in Nepal. It is as popular as the Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Langtang Valley Trek.

It used to be one of the longest treks around the Annapurna region, with 23 days of trekking through the quaint villages, lush green alpine forests, the verdant uphill and downhill paths following the Masyangdi and Kali Gandaki Rivers, and most of all the gorgeous ranges of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. That was because there was no road access, but now with the development of roads, vehicles go to most parts of the circuit and this can now be done within 12 days. It is the perfect setting for those who have limited time and budget to do the full 23-day trek.

The Annapurna region is truly blessed with the perfect blend of cultural integrity and a hotspot of ecological biodiversity with rare and endangered species of flora and fauna. It is a treat for trekkers who have an affinity for nature and want to get away from the infinite loop of 9-5. The Annapurna Circuit Trek offers a promising opportunity to allow a 12-day retreat to the deepest parts of the Himalayas.

What makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek so special?

Every year, the trekkers from all around the globe make plans to do the highly coveted Annapurna Circuit Trek. The entire 12 days will always have a new adventure promised. There are many things that are considered to be the highlight of the trek and make each and every day special.

Manang: The Gateway for the Annapurna Circuit Trek

The small yet picturesque village of Manang Valley sits amidst the verdant hills and mountains that surround it from all sides. Also known as the “crown jewel of the Annapurna Circuit Trek,” the Manang Valley is known for its extreme natural beauty and some of the spectacular views of the mountains of the Annapurna range and Manaslu.

The village serves as a gateway to the highlighted places, such as Thorong Pass and Tilicho Lake. And apart from the awe inspiring views of the majestic snow capped peaks, Manang also offers cultural and religious flavors. The Tibetan Buddhism practices reflect the culture of the people of Manag.

Mountain Views from the Trails of the Annapurna Circuit Trek

One thing you can be sure of during this trek are the breathtaking views at every turn. All the intense walking from low elevation to high elevation amongst some of the world’s tallest mountains will be worth it. Each day you can see the mountains from different angles and as the days pass, new peaks will come into the field of vision. Some of the iconic mountains include the Annapurna Massif, which includes Annapurna I (8,091 m), Annapurna II (7,937 m), Annapurna III (7,555 m), Annapurna IV (7,525 m), and Annapurna South (7,219 m). The Annapurna I is known as the tenth highest peak in the world.

Apart from the Annapurna Massif, other stunning snow-clad peaks are also there, such as Dhaulagiri (8,167 m), Machapuchare (6,993 m), Manaslu (8,163 m), Tilicho Peak (7,134 m), Gangapurna (7,455 m), Pisang Peak (6,091 m), Chulu East (6,584 m), Chulu West (6,419 m), Thorong Peak (6,144 m), Lamjung Himal (6,983 m), Nilgiri North (7,061 m), Nilgiri Central (6,940 m), Nilgiri South (6,839 m), and Hiunchuli (6,441 m). These majestic peaks covered in pristine white snow can be seen from different places and different angles throughout the trek. Mount Dhaulagiri is also considered the seventh highest peak in the world.

Therefore, this trek is the epitome of the journey with some of the most diverse culture and landscapes and provides the front row seats to view a significant part of the Himalayas.

Thorong La Pass: The highest mountain pass in the world

The mountainous regions are known to have passes, which are the paths that allow people to cross a mountain or ridge. Mountain passes have played a significant role in trade and travel since ancient times. At an altitude of 5,416 meters (17,769 feet) above sea level, the Thorong La Pass is the highest pass in the world.

It definitely is a challenging journey to cross the world’s highest pass but perseverance pays off once you reach the summit of the pass, as you are blessed with the views that are a feast to the eyes. The highest point of the Annapurna Circuit Trek as well as the most adventurous hike. The Himalayan landscape filled with the ranges of Annapurna, Thorong Peak, Tilicho Peak, along with the Kali Gandaki Gorge, and Manang Valley are the highlighted parts of Thorong La.

It is not only the breath-taking views from the top but also the crisp, clear sky and fresh breath of cool mountain air that add to the entire experience, making it a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Muktinath Temple: A holy pilgrimage

Muktinath Temple is one of the popular destinations in Mustang district. On the day you conquer Thorong La, you will arrive at Muktinath after descending. Muktinath Temple is a sacred site and a place of pilgrimage for the followers of both Hindus and Buddhists. The word “Mukti” means liberation and “Muktinath” is known as the God of Liberation.

There is a rich history related to Muktinath for Hindus, who believe the temple to be an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, whereas for Buddhists, it holds significance as it is related to Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. It is a mystical place. The temple has 108 taps with the faces of cows, and the water from the high Himalayas pours out. It is believed that showering under all 108 taps will wash away the sins. It is a mystical part of the journey of the Annapurna Circuit Trek.

A refreshing dip in the hot spring (Tatopani)

Trekking the trails of the Annapurna Circuit isn’t something that is particularly easy. Though there are parts where it is an easy walk, there are also parts of the trail that are considered to be strenuous because of various factors such as rugged uphill terrain and high elevations. The 12 days of adventure will be tiring to the body, so to wash away all the tiredness, you can soak in the natural hot spring, also known as Tatopani in Nepali.

Upon ending the trek, just a few hours away from Jomsom and just on the way to Pokhara, there is a place called Tatopani with a natural hot spring. It truly is a blessing in disguise, as your tired body will thank you once you take a dip in the hot water and feel your muscles relax.

Local Communities in the Trails of the Annapurna Circuit

The diversity of the communities on the trail is something that cannot be missed. While the majority of the people live a lifestyle that is highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, there are also areas where communities follow Hinduism. While the Buddhists are found at higher elevations of the trek, the Hindus inhabit the lower region.

Despite coming from different backgrounds, the communities embrace their diversity and live in peace and unity. Some of the ethnic groups who live along the trails of the Annapurna Circuit include Gurungs, Thakalis, Manages, Magars, Tamangs, and others. Each community has their own unique culture and way of life.

Namaste and welcome to Nepal! Ready to embark on one of the best adventures with us? Upon your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport, our team will be there to pick you up and swiftly transfer you to your hotel. Depending on time of arrival, your itinerary will be based. But in general, your time after getting settled in your hotel will consist of debriefing and preparing for the trek that starts the following day.

And if you happen to have time to spare, you can go around the city of Kathmandu and explore the area, do last-minute shopping, enjoy some Nepalese cuisine, and do other fun and spontaneous activities.

  • Maximum Elevation: 1,350m/4,429ft

Our adventurous journey of 12 days begins early in the morning with an early breakfast and then getting on a bus to Besisahar. It is an exciting drive, as you will be swept away from the hustling and bustling energy that Kathmandu brings and enter a more peaceful area with crisp, clean air, lush green forests, reverberating rivers, and quaint villages with welcoming faces.

The ride to Besisahar can be bumpy at times, but you will have frequent breaks for lunch and stretching your legs. After 5-6 hours of driving, you will finally reach Besisahar and check into a hotel for the night. You will still have time after checking in, which you can utilize by exploring around the village, visiting local cafes, taking in the breathtaking views of the Lamjung Himal, and immersing in local vibes. And finally having dinner before settling in for the night.

  • Accommodation: Hotel
  • Driving Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation:760 m/2,490 ft

Our voyage further continues with another day of driving, and this time we will be switching to a Jeep. The road leading to Chame isn’t exactly smooth, and you might want to hold onto your seats at times. But the spectacular view from the window of your Jeep isn’t something you would trade for the world. Driving through the dense alpine forest of oaks and rhododendrons will be an adventurous ride. And especially if you are traveling in the spring season, you will get to feast your eyes on the full bloom of the rhododendron flowers covering the entire forest.

But this journey isn’t only limited to forests, rivers, and flowers; you will also get a chance to witness the different indigenous livelihoods and villages of communities of Gurungs and Magars. There will be many instances where we will stop to take photos for memories, one of the important ones being a stunning waterfall, and after 5-6 hours of driving, we will arrive at the rustic town of Chame. It is the headquarters of Manang district.

After checking into a comfortable tea house, you can use the remaining free time to explore the town before coming back to the tea house for dinner and finally resting for the night, as the following day our trek will begin.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Driving Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 2,710m/8,892ft

It is the fourth day of this exciting trekking quest, and our day begins with a hearty breakfast to fill our stomachs and give us energy for the day as we will be starting our hike today. The trail presents us with a well-maintained path that follows through the unique landscape that is covered with alpine trees and apple orchards.

Crossing a suspension bridge, we arrive at a small village called Dhukur Pokhari, where we make a stop for a small break before continuing on our journey. The magnificent views of Chulu Peak and Pisang Peak can be seen in the far distance, making the tiring hike even more worth it. After 4-5 hours of walking all day, we will finally arrive at Pisang, which is divided into upper and lower Pisang. These two villages are divided by the Marsyangdi River and are both extremely beautiful in their own right with a vibrant atmosphere. We, however, will be staying in upper Pisang.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 3,300m/10,827ft

If you didn’t feel the gain in altitude yesterday, you will definitely feel it today. Today we will be moving forward to Manang Village, which sits at an elevation of 3,519 meters (11,545 ft). As our previously followed routine, we begin our day with an early breakfast and embark on the day’s trek. Today’s journey will not only incorporate nature but also have a spiritual touch as we get blessings from the old Barga Monastery that is estimated to be over 900 years old.

Spinning the prayer wheels and watching the fluttering of the prayer flag in the wind against the gorgeous backdrops of the mountains, such as Annapurna II and III, Gangapurna Chulu, and Pisang Peak, you will have a spiritual journey. Then we resume our walk till Manang Village, where we will spend two nights.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 3,519m/11,546ft

Today is a part of acclimatization, so that our body will get used to the gain in elevation. It is also a day to rest because, in the coming days, we will be crossing the world’s highest pass, Thorong La. You can spend the day exploring the village itself or set out to hike to some view-points, one of the famous being the Gangapurna Lake, from where not only can you see the pristine lake but also get the best view of the Gangapurna mountain. There is also Manang Glacial Lake. And last but not least, Ice Lake, which is a bit strenuous and time-consuming to reach and come back and takes an entire day.

As there are a lot of options, you can consult with your guide and do what suits the best for you and is in your deep interest. Because no matter what you choose, stunning views are guaranteed. But make sure to get plenty of rest, eat and hydrate, keeping your body and mind healthy because we have more days left of this thrilling Annapurna Circuit Trek

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 3,519m/11,546ft

Our rest day ends here, and a new pursuit begins. Today we will be ascending even higher, so we will walk at a slow but steady pace. By today, you will see a significant difference in the change in landscape from when the trek began till now. The dense alpine forests will have changed to short bushes of shrubs, which are actually trees. The lack of giant trees with big leaves indicates the lack of oxygen due to the high altitude.

You will pass some horses and yaks along the way, which are the main mode for transporting goods to the Himalayas. We will also pass through a small resting spot of a few tea houses, then carry on to Yak Kharka for lunch. It is only around 4 hours of hiking, so we have an option to hike till Ledar, which is an additional 2-3 hours of trek. Staying in Leder will help shorten the distance of the trek for the next two days.

The views from both places, however, are impeccable. Upon reaching our destination, you will be free to explore around until dinner is ready and ultimately hit the hay as early as possible.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Hiking time: 4 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 4,110m/13,485ft

It is the eighth day, and we have gained a good amount of elevation, but we can only go higher from here. Depending on our stay the previous night, we will determine our today’s destination. If we stayed at Yak Kharka, then we will hike up to Thorong Phedi, and if we stayed at Ledar, then our destination will be high camp.

As per our usual schedule, our hike begins after an early morning breakfast. You truly will be in the heart of the Himalayas, and the views of the mountains of the Annapurna Range along with Thorong Peak, Tilicho Peak, and Gangapurna will only get better and better.

After about 4-5 hours of hiking, we will find ourselves at our destination. It is recommended to eat and drink properly and head to bed early because we will be waking up very early, around 3-4 am. So, getting proper rest is very crucial.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 4,600m/15,093ft

Today is one of the most prominent days of the entire trek, as we are setting out to conquer the world’s highest pass, Thorong La. For this, we will wake up very early in the morning while it is still dark out. The reason why we have to cross the pass very early in the morning is because in the afternoon there is extreme wind, making it difficult and dangerous. After having breakfast, we will move around 4:30 am at the latest.

With your headlights showing the way, the dark sky gives us a perfect opportunity for stargazing or viewing the moonlight shining upon the mountains. By the time we reach the top of the Thorong La, it will be bright and early and a perfect time to see the mountains we are surrounded by. The mountains you can see from the pass are Manaslu (8153 m), Mt. Annapurna II (7940 m), Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Thorong Peak, Dhaulagiri, and many other lesser known peaks.

After taking a short break to take pictures and take in the view, we begin our descent. A few hours of descending, we arrive at a place called Thorong Phedi, where we will have lunch. After such a rigorous trek, our stomachs will be growling for food. After lunch, we resume our hike, and now it is a downhill descent till we reach Muktinath. So, we leave Manang district and enter Mustang district. After a total of 8-9 hours of hiking, we will check into a hotel in Muktinath. It is a very spiritual place, and you can take time to explore the surroundings, especially the temple of Muktinath, where Hindu and Buddhist devotees come from all around the world.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Hiking Time: 7-8 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 5,416m/17,770ft

The tenth day and our trekking days are now behind us. You can give your legs rest, as we will be driving back from now on. This route formerly used to be for trekking, but due to the access of roads, people now use Jeeps, cars, and buses. After a hearty breakfast, we will hop on a Jeep (sharing) and start on our journey back to Kathmandu. The ride is filled with views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiris. We make a stop at Jomsom, famous for the Thakali ethnic communities and apple orchards, for lunch.

After lunch, we will continue on our drive and reach a place called Tatopani, where we will stay for the night. The best part of this day is that Tatopani literally translates to “hot water” because this place has a natural hot spring. After checking into your hotel, you can go and take a dip in the hot spring. It will be a relaxing experience after such a tiring trek.

  • Accommodation: Trekking Lodge /Tea House
  • Driving Time: 7-8 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 1,200m/3,937ft

Our trek to the Annapurna Circuit is almost over. Today we will be from Tatopani to the city and the tourist hub, Pokhara. It is only a 4-5 hour drive, and you will arrive at Pokhara for lunch. Once checked into your hotel, you are free to do anything you want. There are a lot of options in Pokhara, from bungee jumping for those who seek an adrenaline rush to having a relaxing boating experience in Phewa Lake, so take your pick.

Most people returning from treks usually book a spa day for massages and relaxation and indulge in different delicious food that wasn’t available during the trek in the mountains. What matters is that you spend the day doing things you like.

  • Accommodation: Hotel Panorama View
  • Driving Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Maximum Elevation: 827m/2,713ft

After an unforgettable journey to the Annapurna Circuit, our final day has arrived. It is sad that it is over but also opens a new door for other travels in your life. And saying that, we will board a tourist bus after a delicious breakfast. Hold on, because it is a long drive back. The roads open a view of the countryside, and the mountains will seem further and further away. You can also catch up on a nap or two by the time you arrive in Kathmandu.

The distinct atmosphere of Kathmandu will welcome you as you are taken back to your hotel. You can take time to relax and rest after such a long journey, and we will see you later in the evening for a farewell dinner. We truly hope you had the best experience trekking the Annapurna Circuit and wish you well for your future endeavors and hope to assist you on your future adventure as well.

Please note: The trekking times indicated above are approximate and are best used as general guidelines. During the Annapurna Circuit Trek, you’ll be able to travel freely at your own pace.

Trip Info

What is the best time to do the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Out of the four seasons, most trekkers prefer spring and autumn. Spring (March-May) and Autumn (October-December) seasons are perfect for trekking to the mountains because they provide the most clear views of the mountains. Not only that, but the temperature is also moderate, making it very suitable for trekking. All the tea houses are open during this time and are able to provide the required services to the trekkers.

Trekking in the spring season allows you to witness some of the best blossoming of rhododendron flowers decorating the trails of the Annapurna Circuit. Meanwhile, autumn provides the clearest sky of pristine blue, making the mountains appear in contrast to the backdrop of the sky.

Summer and winter treks are also done and possible but need extra caution. Summer, which coincidentally also happens to be the monsoon season in Nepal, comes with a lot of risks. While the main trail of the Annapurna Circuit Trek lies in the shadow region, which means it does not get much rainfall; the lower regions, however, experience heavy rainfall. And many areas are very prone to landslides, making travel dangerous.

But taking all the risks and dangers into account and doing a thorough situational analysis, you can do the Annapurna Circuit Trek this summer and even monsoon. But trekkers need to be aware of the problems they can face during this time. And while spring and autumn are considered to be the best times to trek, it can be overcrowded at times.

Winter does not have the risk of landslides and rain and also provides some of the clearest sky for viewing the mountains. However, there will be higher chances of snowing, which decreases the temperature to negative degrees, making it extremely cold. And in cases of snow, walking the trail can also be difficult. But if you are ready to combat extreme cold and snow, then winter trekking of the Annapurna Circuit is possible. In fact, it can be the best time to trek, as off-season does not see many trekkers and you can have the trail all to yourself.

Is the 12-day Annapurna Circuit Trek difficult?

The trail of the Annapurna Circuit Trek can be graded as moderate to strenuous on a difficulty scale. It is possible for first-time trekkers to do this trek but having prior trekking experience would be better. There are multiple factors that contribute to the difficulty of this trek. One of the main reasons is the high altitude. Trekking in mountains makes you susceptible to altitude sickness if not done with proper acclimatization.

Adjusting your body to the lower level of oxygen at higher altitudes comes into play while you are on the trek. The highest elevation point you will reach on the entire trek is the Thorong La Pass (5,416 meters). That means having a fit and healthy body is extremely important. Training and preparing for the trek at least a month before the trek is highly recommended. The trek demands 6-7 hours of hiking on average, and add the strenuous uphill path and high elevation; it can take a lot out of the body.

Diet and hydration also play a crucial role in maintaining your energy level during the trek. Winter, compared to other seasons, can be harder to trek because of the extreme cold and snow. So preparing according to the demands of the trek and doing proper research will make your trekking experience a far better experience instead of going unprepared.

What is the distance of the 12-day Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Depending on the length of days for the Annapurna Circuit Trek, the distance varies. The trek can be anywhere from 160 km to 230 km and takes anywhere from around 12 to 23 days. But for this particular trek of 12 days in total, the distance is approximately 160 km. On average, you will be walking 10-15 km per day for 6-7 hours. But there are days where the trekking hours are longer and shorter than average trekking time.

What is the length of the Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Initially, the trek used to take at least 23–25 days. But that was before roads were constructed and transportation facilities reached many of the places on the trail. For example, two decades ago, trekkers used to start their trek from Bulbule and end in Pokhara. But now the road goes till Chame and can again drive back from Muktinath to Pokhara, saving more than a week of trekking.

For those who are looking to complete the Annapurna Circuit in a matter of less than two weeks, then this itinerary is for you. But if you prefer to trek back the whole way to Jomsom, keep in mind that you will be walking on a road that sees frequent vehicles, which can cause disturbance and blow dust.

I have booked a 12 days annapurna circuit trek with alpine ramble. We were accompanied by the guide named Purna (23yrs of experience) and our dear porters named Man and Manoj. The whole team was very respectful, polite, super caring and very lovely. Purna is very funny and has great knowledge of the whole Annapurna region, all the heights of every single mountain included. The tour was challenging but very beautiful with breathtaking views. Everything was well organised, accomodations were just fine, at no point we had to sleep in a dorm, most of the booked rooms even had a toilet and/or shower (sometimes even warm ones :D). Each stage of the route was planned in such a way that it was physically manageable (not sure if the organisation has anything to do with it or it's just the circuit itself).I can fully recommed alpine ramble and especially with the above mentioned team. We felt very safe and taken care of all the long way throught the mountains. धन्यवादDhan'yavāda !!! and maybe till next time! :)

The greatest adventure of my life! We did the 12-day Annapurna Circuit trek as part of our honeymoon and it blew away our expectations. Our guide Lok, was first class in terms of his knowledge, experience and most importantly, enthusiasm on the trek. Our porter, Manchit, was phenomenal and the best on the trail…faster and stronger than all the younger porters. We would not have made it over Thorong La without them. Dil made coordination and planning a breeze and was a pleasure to work with.

I would 100% recommend Alpine Ramble for your trek and please request Lok as your guide…he really is the best!

Alpine Ramble made this trip spectacular from the moment we we’re collected from the airport until the moment we we’re dropped off again. Every day was planned out really well and meant my partner and I never had to worry about everything except taking in the sites. Prashant and siree we’re an excellent crew. Giving us space when we needed it and being there to help at any time. We are already looking forward to our next trip with these guys and would highly recommend to anyone thinking about trekking in Nepal.

A very good team who supported us for all our needs during this trek. They went above and beyond in keeping us comfortable and to experience the trek in a fantastic way.
We couldn’t have done this without the team including Dilman, Bahadur, Ayush, Shamsher, Namsher and Dil. A big thanks to their efforts and support.
    Thanks
