Overview

“Step away from the crowds and into the mesmerizing Mansiri Himal, a virtually undiscovered alpine paradise where time stands still. Meet friendly villagers, trek across beautiful high-altitude pastures, and come face-to-face with the eighth-highest mountain in the world on our exclusive Manaslu Circuit Trek.”

Manaslu Circuit Trek Overview 2024/2025

Are you looking to escape the high-season crowds of foreign trekkers on the Everest Base Camp Trek? Or are you searching for a greater challenge than the well-trodden trails of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek offers a glimpse into Nepal’s past: rugged trails, soaring mountain scenery, picturesque Tibetan-influenced villages, and the abundant splendor of unspoiled nature.

The Manaslu Trekking Trail looks like

The trail winds through a beautifully preserved conservation area, and it’s only been accessible to permitted visitors since the early 1990s. Despite its relative obscurity, the Manaslu Circuit Trek continues to grow in popularity year after year—and many of our guides now consider it to be the best all-around trek in the entirety of Nepal. At Alpine Ramble Treks, we’ve developed a 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary to introduce you to the wonders of the incredible Manaslu region.

What to Expect During the 12-Day Manaslu Trek

Our itinerary will allow you to visit two distinct regions: the Annapurna region and the Manaslu region, which is also known as the Mansiri Himal. Of course, the chief draw of the Mansiri Himal is Manaslu itself: at an elevation of 8,163 meters, this snow-covered peak ranks as the world’s eighth-highest mountain.

As you ascend to higher elevations on the Manaslu Circuit Trek, you’ll enjoy increasingly spectacular views of this Himalayan giant. But you’ll also enjoy the majestic company of many other towering summits, such as Himalchuli and Ngadi Chuli—not to mention the many unnamed forested hillsides where you may be able to catch a glimpse of musk deer, blue sheep, and more than one hundred species of birds.

Is Larke La pass the highest point on the Manasu trek?

All told, the scenery you’ll get to experience on this trek is hard to beat, and few mountain viewpoints can compete with the high-altitude pass of Larkya La. At 5,106 meters, this is the highest point on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The chance to reach this breathtaking pass is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Why Manaslu Trek with Alpine Ramble

But the grandeur of the alpine scenery isn’t the only reason to consider the Manaslu Circuit Trek. As you climb into these mountains, you’ll see that this part of Nepal is populated by villagers of Tibetan descent. Exploring the Manaslu region is one of the best ways to learn more about the undiluted customs, dress, and languages of the Tibetan plateau, including the rich religious traditions of its people. The opportunity to visit timeless centers of worship like the Samagaon Monastery, tucked beneath the shelter of towering Himalayan mountains, is sure to leave a lasting impression on your memories.

Manaslu trek tea house trek

You’ll also get to spend each night of the trek in absolute comfort—our accommodations will be booked at hospitable local teahouses, where you’ll enjoy good conversation and a home-cooked meal each day. Experiences like these are what make the Manaslu Circuit Trek one of the most rewarding hiking adventures you can book. Reach out to us when you’re ready to plan your own adventure! At Alpine Ramble Treks, we’re always available via Whatsapp at +977 9851175531.

Best time for Manaslu trek 2022-23

Weather in the Himalayas is variable, and the best trekking seasons are usually determined by the arrival of the summer monsoon and the chance of winter snowfall. The best time of year to undertake the Manaslu Circuit Trek is during the autumn season, between September and November. You’ll enjoy crisp days and clear mountain views. Some hikers prefer to travel during the spring, which occurs from February to May. This is the time of year when wildflowers are in bloom and temperatures are at their most comfortable.

Trekking in Manaslu in Winter and Summer

Winter and summer hikes on the Manaslu Circuit Trek are also possible, although you may need specialized gear due to the chance of snowfall, heavy rains, and landslides. If your schedule only allows you to visit Nepal during the winter or summer, Alpine Ramble Treks will be happy to offer our best advice and guidance to ensure a successful Himalayan adventure.

Welcome to Kathmandu! Your adventure begins in this historic valley, which is packed with UNESCO World Heritage sites and important centers of both Buddhist and Hindu worship. After meeting your guide at your hotel, you’ll set off for the road trip to Soti Khola. This trip should last about six or seven hours, and you’ll enjoy pleasant views of picturesque Nepali countryside along the way. About halfway through the trip, the highway will turn into an unsurfaced road, and the views will begin to get even more spectacular. Upon arrival in Soti Khola, we’ll check into the first of many comfortable guesthouses, where you’ll meet some friendly locals and enjoy your first taste of Himalayan mountain cuisine.

    • Driving time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

Are you ready to hit the trail? Our first real day on the Manaslu Circuit Trek serves as a gentle introduction to the spellbinding trails which wind their way through this part of the Himalayas. We’ll ascend and descend throughout the day, stopping to appreciate several gorgeous cliffside waterfalls before eventually crossing an exciting suspension bridge and following the course of the Buri Gandaki river on the approach to Machha Khola. We’ll stop here for the night after spending about four or five hours hiking. We’ll select the best available trekking lodge or teahouse to enjoy a home-cooked meal and lay our heads to rest on our second night in the mountains.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

After savoring a hearty teahouse breakfast, we’ll set off for another day of hiking along the Manaslu Circuit Trek. Our path today follows the watercourse of the Buri Gandaki, passing the hot springs at Tatopani and leading us across a series of suspension bridges. As we trek through the river valley, we’ll enjoy increasingly spectacular glimpses of the mighty Himalayas towering over the green hills of the Manaslu region. We’ll stop for the day in Jagat, which is best known for its striking flagstone village square. Jagat also serves as the entrance to the Manaslu Conservation Area, and we’ll have our permits checked here before proceeding further into the mountains. Make sure to get plenty of sleep tonight in preparation for tomorrow’s trek—you’ve earned it!

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

Leaving Jagat behind, we’ll begin today’s hike with a short climb through a few small villages before descending to reach a picturesque waterfall and swiftly flowing alpine stream. We’ll use a wooden bridge to cross the water, moving deeper into the mountains and passing through a number of small settlements. Keep your camera handy—the forests of pine and bamboo in this part of the region are especially evocative when steeped in the mist steaming from the river’s edge. After approximately six hours of trekking, we’ll find ourselves in Deng, or Dyang. This is a particularly small village, but you’ll find that its inhabitants are friendly and welcoming, and the views of the valley’s surrounding natural beauty are nothing short of awe-inspiring. We’ll stop here in Deng for another night’s rest.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

Today’s path continues to follow the line of the Buri Gandaki river, and we’ll descend and ascend alternately before crossing the river on the first of several suspension bridges. If you’re trekking during the springtime, the green hills rising above the river will really come alive with the colorful blooms of rhododendron blossoms. But this part of the trail is beautiful at any time of year, and we’ll be hiking through Tibetan-style villages and verdant forests of pine, fir, and juniper as we draw closer to the settlement of Namrung. We’ll stop for the night here in Namrung, where we’ll enjoy spectacular mountain views from our cozy Himalayan teahouse.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

As we ascend higher into the mountains, we’ll get to feast our eyes on increasingly superb alpine scenery. You may also notice the prevalence of Buddhist monasteries in this region—as we climb to higher altitudes, the cultural influence of the Tibetan Plateau becomes even more pronounced. Hiking through little villages and fields of barley, we’ll eventually reach a glacier-fed river before climbing to wide-open pastures where yaks graze freely beneath the towering peaks of the Mansiri Himal. Chief amongst these summits are the mighty mountains of Manaslu and Himalchuli. After about six or seven hours of trekking, we’ll reach Samagaon. At 3,530 meters, this is the highest point on our trek so far. We’ll spend the next two nights at the best available teahouse or trekking lodge in this scenic village.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

Now that we’ve started to reach some serious altitude, we’ll use today to allow our bodies the time they need to adjust to the increase in elevation. Fortunately, Samagaon is a surpassingly beautiful place to spend our short layover in the mountains. The chief point of interest is undoubtedly the small but-striking monastery called Pungyen Gompa. The gompa is nestled against a picturesque hillside festooned with prayer flags, and our visit here is sure to rank amongst your favorite memories of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. If you’re keen to stretch your legs, we can also undertake a day hike to the freshwater alpine lake called Birendra Tal or even to Manaslu Base Camp. When you’ve explored the surroundings of Samagaon to your heart’s content, we’ll return to our guesthouse to spend a second night.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

With our bodies properly acclimated to the high altitude, it’s time to take our next steps on the Manaslu Circuit Trek. We’ll follow the south bank of the Buri Gandaki after breakfast this morning, trekking across a landscape of low-lying shrubs as we climb closer and closer to Manaslu itself. We’ll pass mani walls carved with Buddhist mantras and stands of birch and juniper before crossing a wooden bridge and reaching Samdo. The views from this town are astonishing, and you’ll have plenty of time left in the day if you choose to ascend the hill above the village for an even better look at Manaslu. We’ll select a comfortable guesthouse here in Samdo to enjoy a hot meal and a warm bed.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 3-4 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

This is a short day of hiking compared to the rest of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, but that just means we’ll have even more time to enjoy the remarkable views of the Himalayas—which are now closer than ever. After breakfast, we’ll begin our trek with a short descent through alpine fields, crossing a handful of small streams and passing the old market known as Larkya Bazaar. We’re now very close to the border with Tibet, and local traders still use nearby mountain passes to travel across the border. We’ll climb from here, taking the very first steps on our ascent to Larkya La—but we’ll save that pass for tomorrow. Today, we’ll stop in Dharamsala. Not to be confused with the much larger city of Dharamsala in the Indian foothills, this Dharamsala is much smaller—and much closer to the mountains. We’ll spend the rest of the day at our leisure, preparing for tomorrow: the most exciting day on the Manaslu Circuit Trek!

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 2-3 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

This morning, we’ll begin the epic ascent to reach the mountain pass called Larkya La, or Larke La, just in time for sunrise. It’s a short-but-steep hike that takes approximately three hours to climb the barren, windswept landscapes on the way to the pass. You won’t want to miss the perpetually frozen alpine lakes as we tread higher into the mountains, as the air grows thinner and a sense of magic begins to infuse the atmosphere with anticipation. Larkya La itself sits at approximately 5,100 meters and offers far-reaching vistas of Manaslu, Himlung Himal, Annapurna II, and their many glaciated neighbors. After stopping to catch our breath—and take plenty of photographs—we’ll begin our descent on the other side. The way leads down scree-covered slopes and valley trails for over 1,000 meters before arriving at Bimtang. The village once served as an important center of trade with Tibet, and it’s worth looking around—but you might just find yourself heading straight to bed after today’s unforgettable hike. We’ll overnight at a trekking lodge here in Bimtang to get some hard-earned rest.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 7-8 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

This morning, we’ll bid a wistful farewell to the mountains and begin our descent back into the rhododendron and oak forests of the foothills. We’ll trace the riverbanks of the Soti Khola and Dudh Khola, where a few small villages are clustered. The settlement of Gho makes a good stopover for lunch; afterward, we’ll trek through scrub forests and fields to pass through Tilje and cross the Marsyangdi river on the last of the suspension bridges that have become such an iconic part of our Manaslu Circuit Trek. We’ll stop for the night when we reach Dharapani, where our path connects with the Annapurna Circuit Trek and the trail begins to grow busier. Our lodgings tonight will be at another cozy teahouse or trekking lodge, where we’ll swap stories of our success on the Manaslu Circuit Trek before retiring for our last night on the trail.

    • Accommodation: Tea house/ trekking lodge
    • Trekking time: 6-7 hrs approx
    • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
    • Max. Altitude: 710m/2,330ft

On our final day of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, we’ll make the seven-hour drive from Dharapani to Kathmandu, stopping at the trekkers’ hub of Besi Shahar for lunch along the way. As we travel back to the capital city, we’ll leave the rough mountain roads behind us and travel on smooth tarmac. But that doesn’t mean we have to leave the views behind us—any road trip in Nepal is guaranteed to keep your eyes glued to the windows as terraced fields, hills and mountains, and pastoral scenes of timeless village life sweep by our vehicle. When we arrive in Kathmandu, we’ll check into our hotel for some rest before getting together in the evening to enjoy a final celebratory farewell dinner. And when it’s time to depart Nepal, we’ll bring you back to the Tribhuvan International Airport in plenty of time for your flight—we can’t wait to welcome you back!

Strongly recommend the Manaslu 12 Day trek. I booked this trek through Alpine Ramble without really knowing which of the many online tour operators to go with. I couldn’t have been more happy with the service. Really prompt feedback on concerns and requests, and everything was taken care of on arrival in Kathmandu by our fantastic guide Iman. The trek itself is magnificent. It starts off a little slowly to get you acclimatised but soon reveals some of the most spectacular scenery in Nepal. A longer hike, but well worth the extra days to see the pass and surrounds, and the vast ranges on all sides.Cannot recommend Alpine Ramble enough, if you’re wondering which trekking operator to go with, rest easy with this choice.

From the outset our experience with Alpine Ramble was excellent: before we had even departed our home countries, Dil Gurung was a communication superstar: he responded promptly to emails and took great care in trying to assist us and plan the perfect Manaslu and Tsum Valley 21 day Itinerary.

Though we had never before met, I was warmly greeted at the airport by Dil and our guide with a Nepalese flower garland (mala I think it is called).

Dil went over and above what I expected from a tour co-ordinator - he helped me at the hotel, changing money and finding bits and pieces I needed prior to the trek. He took time helping our group organize gear hire and explaining the itinerary in detail.

Once on the trek, our group realized that we were trekking at different paces. This was not a problem for the Alpine Ramble team, who ensured that we could all trek at our own pace, enjoy the beautiful surrounds, and arrive safely at our destination each day.

Dil did not trek with us but was always able to be contacted by Whatsapp, text or calls wherever we had internet/mobile reception (which admittedly wasn't often in the Manaslu/Tsum Valley area - the remoteness is one of the best features of this trek!). When we did get in touch with Dil he responded immediately and was extremely helpful.

We were lucky to have two amazing porters. In particular, Sujal Gurung was outstanding: he was one of the most helpful and humble people I have ever met. Unfortunately, I had not realized just how tough the trek would be on my knees and I struggled with knee pain from about the second day. This slowed me down greatly, but Sujal walked with me every day, ensuring that I was never alone. He let me have breaks where needed and even tried to give me knee massages to ease the pain. I spent more time with Sujal than with our guide and, despite being employed as a porter, Sujal was able to teach me many things about Nepali culture. His love for Nepal is infectious, as is his personality! Sujal was happy to help with everything - not just carrying bags, but helping with the small things like bringing us our meals, finalising packing, getting hot water for drink bottles at night, even taking my drink bottle out of my bag so I didn't have to remove the whole backpack to take a drink! No job was too big or too small for Sujal, and he did everything with a smile. We were even privileged enough to enjoy his musical entertainment - singing Nepali songs throughout the trek!

The trek itself was harder than I had anticipated, with every day involving steep rocky paths up and down (even if the final destination for the day was 200m higher than the starting point, there would be both steep ascents and descents)!

We got to see some very beautiful and isolated places, as well as traditional Nepalese villages. The highlight of the trip for me was staying at a nunnery with two Tibetan nuns near Mu Gompa. We couldn't speak Tibetan with the nuns but they were kind, keeping us warm by the fire and cooking for us...and allowing us to sleep in a beautiful and very isolated temple overnight.

Dharapani was a challenge - not only was it freezingly cold at night (the water in my bottle froze and my tent did not zip up properly), the toilets were disgusting (I strongly urge against using the provided toilets...you might slip on something undesirable while trying to squat.

On the hardest day, the day we crossed Larke Pass, Sujal was like an angel for me: I was freezingly cold and tired, walking very slowly (far behind the rest of my group) and seriously considering whether exhaustion and cold were a good enough reason to call a rescue helicopter. Sujal didn't let me give up, and at times showed more faith in me than I had in myself. He walked slowly with me, reassuring me that we would go bistari (slowly) and we would be successful at Larke Pass. All the other travelers attempting the pass that day seemed to have passed me and I could hardly believe this was true. Despite my doubts, Sujal did not ever despair, even carrying me where I felt I could walk no longer. In the end Sujal's faith in me won out: we successfully reached Larke Pass (maybe 6 or 7 hours after we departed) , and I was overcome with tears of relief, happiness, and gratitude: in a strange country where I knew no one, a stranger had treated me with such great care and shown so much faith in me, making me feel as though I was on a journey with a friend of many years or a family member who had complete faith in me - and was right! It is hard to describe the feeling in words, but please know that it was this feeling of trust, feeling like I was cared for/about, the positive bouncy energy of Sujal's youth and his incredible strength that got me up and over the pass.

Back in Kathmandu Dil arranged for a tour of the city for me - unfortunately, it was very quick, as I was soon flying back home. The guide was extremely knowledgeable in the areas of Nepalese culture, history, and religion. He had piqued my curiosity and made me want to learn and understand more - perhaps by returning to Nepal one day.

I am so grateful to both Dil and Sujal for making my trip to Nepal a happy one. They both exhibited a sense of warmth, care and humility that is not common, especially in the competitive tourism market. These are things that can't really be quantified in monetary terms, and it was this, perhaps more so than the majesty of the Himalayas, that made my trip truly special and made the goodbye at the airport extremely difficult and sad for me. Hopefully, though, it is a 'see ya later' rather than a 'goodbye', as I would love to return to Nepal and see my Nepalese family again.

I can only hope that those of you reading this review choose Alpine Ramble and have the same wonderful experience as I did.

We had an amazing and very authentic experience hiking through this remote and breathtakingly beautiful part of the country. The Alpine Ramble team was ever so attentive to our every need. The team that guided us through the trek was well supported by the team in Kathmandu. Overall, a great adventure and experience.

We heard this walk was not for the faint-hearted and it isn't but we enjoyed immensely the 21-day trek through spectacular valleys with dramatic mountain views crossing high- energy raging rivers staying in remote local villages, some shared with yaks due substantially to the high-level skills and experience of the Alpine Ramble team.
I have walked twice before with Dil. As previously, his skills in arranging the walk were exceptional. And as always, he was a pleasure to work with.
Krishna was an outstanding guide with many years of experience. He also proved a good cook. He was compassionate and thoughtful, providing strong leadership when required.
Sujal was cheerful and patient in his assisting guide roles. Sumir and Annil were heroic in heavy-lifting the effort then happily pitching in with other trekking roles. They were all great company - we walked as a family.

I highly recommend the Alpine Ramble team for any serious remote treks in Nepal.

We recently returned from this epic trek in Nepal.with Alpine Ramble Treks. Our group spent 21 days trekking in this wonderful Himalayan landscape, a big thank you to Dil and his team who took great care of us. This adventure exceeded my expectations and was enhanced by the attentive care taken by Krishna, Sujal, Samir and Onnil, our guides and porters. I would recommend Alpine Ramble Treks for their support and professionalism. Thank you for showing us your beautiful country and culture.
