A Great Alternative to the Everest Base Camp Trek

If there’s too much hustle and bustle along the trails of the Everest Base Camp Trek to tempt you into Nepal’s mountainous Khumbu region, consider the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek instead.

This is the Khumbu as it used to be: winding riverine trails still free of crowds, mountainside Sherpa villages where yaks still graze in herds, and quiet alpine viewpoints where the skyscraping peaks of the high Himalayas still exert a powerful hush over the landscape.

Alpine Ramble Treks has carefully designed a 10-day Everest trekking itinerary for travelers who want to avoid the crowds without missing out on the very best that the region has to offer, including dramatic views of Everest’s picture-perfect northwest face.

Experience the Allure of Trekking in Nepal

A front-and-center view of Mount Everest is only one of many highlights of our 10-day Everest Gokyo Lake Trek.

As we ascend from the airport at Lukla to delve into the world’s highest mountains, we’ll trek beneath the overhanging summits of Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Makalu to reach the storied villages of Phakding and Namche Bazaar.

And it’s here that our route diverges from the Everest Base Camp Trek, ascending through the wild and rugged environment of Sagarmatha National Park on quiet trails to explore traditional Sherpa communities, ancient monasteries, and spellbinding scenes of natural beauty.

These incredible glimpses into the scenery and culture of Nepal are what makes trekking in the Himalayas so unforgettable.

What can you expect on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek?

Our trek is named after the Gokyo Lakes. At 4,700 meters above sea level, these lakes comprise the highest freshwater lake system on the planet, and there are actually six main bodies of water.

We’ll pay a close visit to three of the most beautiful: Longponga Tso, Taujung Tso, and Gokyo Tso. There is scarcely any beauty in the world that can compare with the deep malachite color of their waters rippling in an alpine breeze or the ethereal reflection of the Ngozumpa glacier shimmering across the surface of the lakes when the wind drops.

We’ll also ascend to the marvelous viewpoint of Gokyo Ri, where your exertion on the trail will be rewarded with astonishing panoramic views of Khumbu’s most magnificent mountains.

Best Time of Year for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek

The best time of year for the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek is much the same as the best time of year for the Everest Base Camp Trek. Weather in Nepal is variable, and the best trekking seasons are usually determined by the arrival of the summer monsoon.

In order to avoid the wettest conditions, many hikers travel during the spring, which occurs from February to March. This is the time of year when wildflowers are in bloom and temperatures are at their most comfortable.

Other trekkers might prefer to undertake the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek during the autumn season, between September and November.

This is perhaps the best time of year for crisp days and clear mountain views. Of course, winter treks are also possible; while temperatures can be cold and trails can be packed with snow, there is an undeniable appeal to enjoying the majesty of the Khumbu without a crowd.

We typically recommend against hiking the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek during summer. If your schedule only allows you to visit Nepal during the summer, Alpine Ramble Treks will be happy to arrange a proper Himalayan adventure on one of our many alternate routes.

Please note: On rare occasions, domestic flights between Kathmandu and Lukla may be delayed or canceled due to weather conditions. This can happen during any time of the year, and you can rest assured that Alpine Ramble Treks will work with you to make any possible alternative arrangements to minimize the interruption to your holiday.

Everest Gokyo Lake Trek Difficulty

While prior trekking experience is not a prerequisite for our Everest Gokyo Lake Trek package, this is a moderately difficult hiking trail with a maximum elevation of more than 5,000 meters.

You’ll be walking for six or seven hours each day, and the trail ascends and descends as it winds through countless side valleys and high-altitude mountain passes.

For these reasons, you should be in good health and have physical fitness before embarking on this trek. Walking, running, and other forms of cardiovascular exercise are great ways to prepare for the opportunity to visit the high-altitude Gokyo Lakes.

An expert guide from Alpine Ramble Treks will also be assigned to watch over you, monitor your progress and condition, and shepherd you safely all the way from Luka to Gokyo—and back again.

More Everest Trekking Options

If our 10-day Everest Gokyo Lake Trek isn’t quite what you’re looking for, Alpine Ramble Treks has plenty of Everest trekking alternatives here in Khumbu. Consider our 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek or our eight-day alternative option.

And if you’re only here on a brief visit, you can still enjoy the splendor of the world’s tallest mountain by booking our Everest Helicopter Tour or Scenic Everest Flight.

With convenient departures from Kathmandu, these day trips are a fantastic way to get up close and personal with Mt. Everest when you’re short on time. We can also arrange for trips to any other region of Nepal, like the fantastic Annapurnas or the exciting Langtang region.

Additional benefits of this trek

  • Free transfers to and from Tribhuvan International Airport upon arrival and departure.
  • Complimentary use of any necessary trekking equipment, such as sleeping bags, down jackets, duffle bags, walkie-talkies, trekking poles, and an oximeter to monitor your oxygen and pulse.
  • Fun souvenirs of your Himalayan adventure: a trekking route map, a t-shirt emblazoned with the Alpine Ramble Treks logo, and a hat!

Please note: The trekking times indicated Below are approximate and are best used as general guidelines. During the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, you’ll be able to travel freely at your own pace. We also recommend arriving in Kathmandu at least one day before your scheduled itinerary begins; this will allow you to meet with our trekking team in advance to learn more about your planned activities. Staying in Kathmandu for an extra day or two at the end of the itinerary will also provide you with a more flexible schedule in the event that mountain flights between Kathmandu and Lukla are delayed due to weather.

Itinerary

The scenic alpine flight from Kathmandu to Lukla only takes half an hour to complete, but it’s widely regarded as the most exciting flight in the world. No other flight offers such incredible views of the Himalayas, and the anticipation of our upcoming trek certainly adds to the exhilaration! When we land in this little mountain town, we’ll meet up with our crew of porters and spend about two hours enjoying some hot tea and good conversation while we adjust to the increased altitude. This is the world-famous Khumbu, the home of the Sherpa people—and the home of Mount Everest.

When it’s time to get moving, we’ll begin our Everest Gokyo Lake Trek by hiking gently downhill, passing through the Sherpa village of Cheplung before following the banks of the Dudh Koshi river. Soon we’ll reach the first of many gravity-defying suspension bridges which characterize the mountains and valleys of the Khumbu. We’ll cross the bridge and trek through another town known as Ghat before continuing past a series of Buddhist stupas and mani walls, which are comprised of a multitude of stones carved with Buddhist mantras. We’ll share the trail with other trekkers, locals, and even the occasional train of yaks! After about three hours on the march, we’ll reach the village of Phakding, where we’ll take our lodgings for the night at the best available trekking lodge or teahouse.

Please note: Your flight to Lukla may depart from the Ramechhap Airport in Manthali rather than Kathmandu, due to ongoing upgrades at the Tribhuvan International Airport. Alpine Ramble Treks will keep you apprised of the situation and arrange any necessary additional transportation via microbus.

  • Accommodation: Azalia/ Sherpa Lodge
  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hrs approx
  • Meals: Lunch and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 2,800m/9,187ft

Our second day on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek will bring us from the little village of Phakding all the way to the most significant town in the Khumbu: Namche Bazaar. We’ll continue to follow the waterline of the Dudh Koshi as we get started, ascending through forests of rhododendron, fir, Himalayan pine, and cedar to gain fantastic views of the mountains Thamserku and Kusum Kanguru. Our path then leads across a number of suspension bridges and into more pine forest, punctuated with the occasional tiny mountain settlement or guesthouse. Before arriving at Namche Bazaar, we’ll reach a splendid viewpoint where we’ll get our first good look at Everest itself. When you’ve had your fill of this remarkable view, we’ll make the final push to Namche Bazaar. This historic trading hub is built like an arena within a mountain amphitheater, surrounded by the high peaks of the snowcapped Himalaya. We’ll get checked into our lodge and drop off our bags, leaving you with plenty of time this afternoon to explore the bustling local markets.

  • Accommodation :Sakura/ Alpine Lodge
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 3,438m/11,280ft

Today serves as an acclimatization day in Namche; as we reach higher altitudes, our bodies need some time to adjust to the increased elevation and rarefied atmosphere. Fortunately, we still have plenty of options to keep ourselves busy. We can take a day hike towards the twin villages of Khumjung and Khunde, and we can stop at the Hotel Everest View to enjoy the unforgettable sight of Everest, Taboche, Thamserku, and many other Himalayan mountains scraping the sky. In Khumjung, we’ll visit the Edmund Hillary School, named after the world-famous New Zealand mountaineer who first reached the summit of Everest with Tenzing Norgay. The nearby Khumjung Monastery also holds a mysterious relic dating back to 1995: a purported yeti scalp! After taking a close look at this fascinating piece of Himalayan history, we’ll descend back to Namche Bazaar to visit the Sherpa Museum and photo gallery before spending another night at our lodge.

  • Accommodation :Sakura/ Alpine Lodge
  • Hiking Time: 2 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 3,438m/11,280ft

After our acclimatization day at Namche Bazaar, we’ll begin our next morning on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek fully rested and ready to keep hiking. Our path descends gently through Sherpa villages clustered beneath staggering peaks like Taboche, Cholatse, and the mighty Ama Dablam. If we’re lucky, we may be able to spot wildlife like the Himalayan tahr or the danphe, Nepal’s own national bird. Continuing on, we’ll ascend to the mountain pass of Mong La, which is a great place to stop for tea while enjoying some truly outstanding views. From here, we’ll trek down through a pleasant forest of pine and giant fir, passing the town of Phortse Thenga and climbing once more to arrive at Dole. This is a picturesque mountain village with stone walls, green fields, and sweeping views of Thamserku and Kangtega. We’ll stop here for a hard-earned dinner and a good night’s rest.

  • Accommodation: Local lodge
  • Hiking time: 4-5 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 4,200m/13,779ft

Today’s hike is relatively short, so we’ll take our time eating breakfast and making the most of the spectacular views and peaceful ambiance here in Dole. When we’re ready to lace up our boots and move on, we’ll make a gradual ascent on stark hills blanketed sparsely with low-lying grassy tussocks. We’ll trek past seasonally-used settlements to earn spectacular views of Cho Oyu, which towers over the surrounding scenery at 8,188 meters. Our path then follows the course of the Dudh Koshi, leading us through the river valley to reach Machhermo after approximately two or three hours in total. Machhermo is an especially agreeable little mountain village with about six seasonal lodges and a hospital. If you’re feeling restless, we can ascend to the ridge just above town to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest—otherwise, we’ll take the rest of the day at our leisure, enjoying the relaxed vibes of Machhermo before spending the night at our teahouse or trekking lodge.

  • Accommodation: Good Luck Lodge
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 4,470m/14,666ft

Today, we’ll lay our eyes at last upon the lakes which have given the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek its name. To get there, we’ll begin by hiking past Sherpa villages along a steep ridgeline and passing some chortens, or stupas, before reaching a stone staircase that will take us to the moraine of the Ngozumpa Glacier. It’s here that the Gokyo Lakes are found, between the glacial moraine and the face of Cho Oyu: the world’s sixth highest mountain. The first of their number is Longponga Tso, whose waters are surrounded by low brown hills and ringed with small boulders where pilgrims and travelers have erected a number of little stone cairns. Continuing on, we’ll approach the second lake: Taujung Tso, which is only a short distance away but is even more picturesque against a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks.

From here, our path leads on through the stark, rock-strewn landscape of the glacial moraine for about half an hour before arriving at Gokyo itself. This village is truly a wonder out of time: with its stunning location clustered on the shores of Gokyo Tso, its herds of yaks, and its comfortable stone-built houses, it’s sure to rank high on your own personal list of Everest trekking highlights. Gokyo is situated at a staggering 4,750 meters above sea level, and we’ll spend the rest of the day enjoying the marvels of its high-altitude scenery before spending the night at one of the town’s teahouses.

  • Accommodation Type: Trekking Lodge
  • Trekking time: 4 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 4,800m/15,749ft

After early morning breakfast, we’ll shoulder our packs and begin the ascent to Gokyo Ri, where we’ll earn the most spectacular views on the entire Everest Gokyo Lake Trek. Gokyo Ri is a nearby summit situated at 5,360 meters, which we should be able to reach in just about two hours of strenuous climbing. As we ascend, the trail offers fantastic views of the Ngozumpa Glacier and surrounding mountains—but the real star of the show is the panoramic mountain view from the summit itself. We’ll bear witness to the unforgettable natural spectacle of a contiguous wall of snow-laden Himalayan peaks: Everest, Cho Oyu, Lhotse, Cholatse, and Taboche, among others. Alpine views don’t get much better than this, and we’ll spend plenty of time photographing the scene and enjoying the lonely beauty of these austere, frozen mountains. When we’re ready to move on, we’ll retrace our steps to Gokyo and retrieve any gear that we’ve left in town. Then we’ll begin the return trek to Machhermo, passing the alluring Gokyo Lakes once more before arriving at our guesthouse and spending another night in Machhermo.

  • Accommodation Type: Trekking Lodge
  • Trekking time: 5/6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 5,357m/17,576ft

Although we’ll be retracing our steps on this part of the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, we’ve still got a long day of hiking ahead of us—and you may be surprised to see how each step feels fresh and exciting when approached from a new direction. We’ll begin by descending from Machhermo, approaching and eventually crossing the Dudh Koshi river. Passing through a familiar forest of pine and fir, we’ll stop for lunch in Dole before pressing on to bypass Khumjung and arrive at Namche Bazaar after about six or seven hours in total. The rest of the day can be enjoyed at our leisure—but remember that Namche is a historic trading town, and it’s a good place to look for any souvenirs or mementos that you’ve had your eyes on. After savoring a hearty dinner (and maybe a slice of German cake), we’ll spend the night at our guesthouse here in Namche.

  • Accommodation Type: Trekking Lodge
  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 3,438m/11,280ft

It’s almost time to bid farewell to the high peaks of the Himalayas! Leaving Namche behind, we’ll descend through cool, shaded woods this morning, following the same path that we tread just a few short days ago. We’ll pass Phakding, travel along the bank of the Dudh Koshi once more, and return through the pleasant village of Cheplung to arrive back at Lukla. Altogether, you can anticipate spending about five or six hours hiking during this last day on the trail. When we arrive in Lukla, we’ll toast our accomplishments on the Everest Gokyo Lake Trek over dinner in town before retiring to our guesthouse to rest our tired feet.

  • Accommodation Type: Trekking Lodge
  • Hiking time: 5-6 hrs approx
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner (Included)
  • Max. Altitude: 2,800m/9,187ft

Another scenic mountain flight is the first thing on today’s agenda, as we return from the mountain airstrip of Lukla to the capital of Kathmandu. Savor your last views of the Himalaya’s highest peaks from the air before we descend into the Kathmandu Valley, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel. You’ll have plenty of time today to catch up on your sleep, shop for unique handicrafts and curios, or visit the many cultural attractions here in the city. Tonight, we’ll get together for a final farewell dinner in the Thamel district. We’ll also arrange your transportation back to Tribhuvan International Airport when it’s time for your departure flight. Thank you for choosing Alpine Ramble Treks for your Everest Gokyo Lake trekking adventure!

As we trek in the mountain our body obviously needs a good level of dieting foods like protein and carbohydrates to maintain our fitness level for the trekking. However, the meal on this trek is very handy but it might be slightly different in size and taste than it in city areas.

During the trek, we have a pretty wide selection of the food items on the tea houses menus which are originated and prepared by the local community, the names of the most common meals of the region as given below.

On the tea houses, the menu has plenty of non-veg items mentioned but officially any of the meats are not on our list of recommendations because the meat in the mountain such as high areas is not sanitary and healthy. Water options

Everest region has many shops or even on tea house you will easily be found the regular bottle of mineral water to buy, also we have plenty of water sources along the way, refilling the water from the random taps or water source is potable but it will be fine to drink with a Lifetraw or using the water purification pills. Remember, water is one of the most important factors while trekking at such a high altitude and it might be replaced as oxygen – at least 2-4 L of water per day is recommended.

Accommodation facts

Accommodations on the mountain are very simple in tea hoses. The rooms typically only 2- 3 single beds with nice and warm blankets, pillows, comfortable matrices, attached bathrooms (not everywhere), and nice views. Dil Gurung is a safe pair of hands. This summarizes what he does in a nutshell. He has fantastic emotional quotient and is attentive to detail and to every single member of his expedition client team. I would go back with him to the Nepali Himalayas any time. I would endorse him as an excellent guide for an international audience. It is great to see that his enterpreneurship has led him to set up his own outfit. His maturity and conscientiousness are remarkable.
