Overview

“The word is out—there’s a fantastic hiking route in the Annapurnas where you can still escape the crowds to enjoy unfettered access to the most beautiful mountains in the Himalayas. This is the Mardi Himal Trek!”

Mardi Himal Trekking: a hidden gem amongst the world-famous Annapurnas

The Mardi Himal Trek first opened to tourists in 2012, and it’s grown more popular with the passing of each subsequent trekking season.

Travelers from near and far are quickly discovering what local folks have known all along: this region of the Annapurnas is a place of startling beauty and diversity, where you can ascend from subtropical wetlands to high-altitude mountain passes over the course of approximately one week.

You’ll tread beneath the soaring heights of the fishtail-shaped Machapuchare, pass through dewy forests resounding with birdsong, cross mountain pastures where yaks and dzo graze, and enjoy the warmth and comfort of cozy trekking lodges situated right in the middle of the impossibly scenic Annapurnas. If you’re ready to learn more about the Mardi Himal Trek, keep reading!

Discover an authentic Himalayan experience on the Mardi Himal Trek

While we guarantee you’ll never forget the sight of the mighty Annapurnas rising to Machapuchare’s iconic summit, trekking in Nepal is about so much more than the scenery.

At Alpine Ramble Treks, we’ve developed a Mardi Himal trekking itinerary that will allow you to forge connections with locals and learn about the traditions associated with Brahmin, Chhetri, and Gurung cultures.

Our trek will take us to the picturesque towns of Phedi and Siding, where you’ll meet plenty of locals who are eager to share their way of life with you.

You’ll also get to visit the country’s two biggest urban centers: the capital city of Kathmandu and the lakeside city of Pokhara.

Best of all, our entire itinerary can be completed in just about a single week, which makes it one of the most accessible trekking packages in the entirety of the Himalayas.

What can you expect on the Mardi Himal Trek?

At the beginning of our Mardi Himal trekking itinerary, we’ll bring you from the colorful streets of Kathmandu to the sparkling waters of Phewa Lake, where Pokhara has earned its reputation as Nepal’s adventure capital.

After checking out the highlights of each city, we’ll plunge into the wilderness of the Annapurnas. While the Mardi Himal Trek isn’t as well known as itineraries like the Annapurna Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit, you’ll quickly discover that this is a grand adventure in its own right.

We’ll spend about five or six hours hiking each day, and our efforts will be rewarded with sublime views of mountains like Machapuchare, Annapurna South, and—of course—Mardi Himal.

The maximum elevation on this itinerary is about 4,500 meters, making it a great choice for trekkers who aren’t quite ready for the breathless altitudes of high-elevation packages like the Everest Base Camp Trek.

And thanks to its low cost, the Mardi Himal Trek is a great entry point for new trekkers who want to experience Nepal’s mighty Himalayas for the first time.

Best Time of Year for the Mardi Himal Trek

Trekking seasons in Nepal are largely dictated by the summer monsoon, and our Mardi Himal Trek is no exception. The monsoon typically lasts from June to August, and most visitors consequently choose to hike during the spring months of February to May or the autumn months of September to November.

These are the best times of year to enjoy the perfect combination of comfortable temperatures and clear mountain views.

But you can hike in the Annapurnas at any time of year, and the snow-laden trails of winter are just as mysterious and evocative as the mist-shrouded hillsides of summer. Whenever you choose to travel, rest assured that Alpine Ramble Treks will put together a trekking adventure that will surpass even your highest expectations.

More Annapurna trekking options

Due to its relatively short length and easily accessible starting point, the Mardi Himal Trek is often combined with a visit to Ghorepani Poon Hill.

Travelers with plenty of time to spare might also consider incorporating their Mardi Himal Trek into an even longer itinerary, including an Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Whatever your budget and schedule, Alpine Ramble Treks will develop the Himalayan hiking itinerary of your dreams!

Nepal’s colorful capital is sometimes called the “city of temples,” and it’s easy to see why: Hindu and Buddhist centers of faith and religious icons characterize every neighborhood here. When you arrive in Kathmandu, a friendly representative from Alpine Ramble Treks will be waiting to whisk you off to lovely hotel accommodations in town. Depending on the time of your arrival, you’ll have the opportunity to visit some of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage sites, like the Swayambhunath stupa or the temple complex of Durbar Square.

Before our Mardi Himal Trek can get properly underway, we’ll need to make the trip from Kathmandu to Pokhara. We can elect to take a comfortable tourist bus, leaving early in the morning and traversing some of Nepal’s most scenic rural landscapes. We can also opt for a commercial flight, which will put us in Pokhara in just about half an hour. Either way, you’ll soon find yourself in the city that’s widely recognized as Nepal’s adventure capital. Take some time to stroll by the reflective waters of Phewa Lake, try some of the irresistible local cuisines, or make the short trip to one of the city’s many panoramic viewpoints. This evening, we’ll spend the night in first-rate hotel accommodations.

After breakfast in Pokhara, it’s time to start our Mardi Himal Trek! First, we’ll make the short drive to Phedi, where the trailhead begins. From here, we’ll ascend on stone-built stairs through verdant woodlands of rhododendron and pine, earning marvelous views of Annapurna South, Mardi Himal, Manaslu, and Machapuchare along the way. You can expect to hike for about four or five hours today, depending on your pace. Our destination is the quaint little community of Pothana, where you’ll be welcomed by hospitable villagers before checking into your teahouse for a home-cooked meal and comfortable accommodations.

Our next morning on the Mardi Himal Trek begins with a hearty breakfast and hot tea as the sun breaks over the Annapurnas. When we’re ready to hit the trail, we’ll climb through green woodlands for about an hour, eventually reaching a magnificent viewpoint at Deurali where we can enjoy unspoiled views of Phewa Lake and the entire surrounding valley—not to mention the icy mountain summits glittering in the light of the morning. From here, we’ll climb through a forest of hemlock and oak to reach a ridgeline, follow the leaf-strewn path steeply downhill, and then climb again to reach the aptly-named Forest Camp, or Kokar. The camp consists chiefly of a collection of teahouses, and it’s situated in a clearing where the mist from the nearby ridgelines is especially evocative. We’ll get checked into our guesthouse here and enjoy the local ambience for the remainder of the evening.

After breakfast today, we’ll ascend through rhododendron forests still dripping with morning dew. This is one of the steeper sections of trail along the Mardi Himal Trek, and we’ll cover about four kilometers over the course of four or five hours today. But the reward is certainly worth the effort! As we climb higher along hills and ridgelines blanketed in forest, you’ll see the white peaks of the Himalayas rising above the greenery. Our accommodations tonight will be at Low Camp, where we’ll discover a small assembly of trekking lodges and restaurants serving local specialties. At camp, you’ll be able to spend the evening simply relaxing and feasting your eyes upon the marvelous views of both Mardi Himal and Machapuchare.

Our Mardi Himal trekking adventure continues today as we hike through a cloud forest environment, pausing to admire the lush ferns and moss growing along the trail. After passing through the forest, we’ll stop for a break at Middle Camp—but our destination lies a few hours ahead. We’ll continue climbing out of the forest, hiking beyond the treeline, and entering a sparsely vegetated part of the trail, where the mountain views really start to become remarkable. All told, we’ll be ascending approximately 500 meters to reach High Camp, where we’ll stop for the evening. After dinner, we’ll watch the sunset over the mountains; the view from High Camp extends in every direction, making an unforgettable panorama of light and shadow as the sun sinks below the horizon.

This is it: the single most exciting day on our Mardi Himal Trek! We’ll get an early start since we can expect to be on our feet for approximately eight hours today. The hike begins as we depart High Camp, ascending on grass-covered ridges and following a narrow path as the elevation rises. We’ll take our time to ascend, especially in winter, when the trail may be further narrowed with snowfall. After about four hours of trekking, we’ll reach Mardi Himal Base Camp at last. The camp is situated at about 4,500 meters, rendering it both the literal and metaphorical high point of our hiking itinerary. In addition to Machapuchare, we’ll enjoy awe-inspiring views of other Himalayan mountains like Annapurna I, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli. After savoring this unbridled spectacle of nature, we’ll retrace our own footsteps back to High Camp, and then follow another path to the village of Siding. We’ll get checked into a teahouse here for the night.

Our Mardi Himal trekking experience is almost over, but we’ve still got one major day of hiking to enjoy. We’ll set off this morning to Lumre: a small village about three hours’ walk from Siding. Along the way, we’ll pass by multiple communities where Brahmin and Gurung villagers live, descending from the heights of the mountains and returning to the green hill country. Upon arriving at Lumre, we’ll enjoy the chance to rest and grab some lunch. Then we’ll meet our prearranged ride back to Pokhara. This final leg of the Mardi Himal Trek only takes two hours by road, and we’ll be back in the city by the lake before you know it. You’ll have plenty of time for sightseeing this evening after checking into your hotel and enjoying a well-deserved shower and nap.

Today, we’ll take an early morning flight from Pokhara to Kathmandu, when the skies are clear and the mountain panoramas are at their most outstanding. When we arrive in Kathmandu, you’ll be ready for your departure flight. Alternatively, if you’re staying in Nepal, we’d be happy to arrange another exciting adventure for you! We hope you’ve enjoyed the Mardi Himal Trek, and we can’t wait to guide you through the Himalayas once more.

Our journey of Mardi Himal Trek in Nepal comes to an end today! An Alpine Ramble Treks representative will drop us off at the airport approximately 2 hours before our scheduled departure flight. If you wish to extend your stay in Nepal for some other adventure activities or visit the neighboring countries like Bhutan, India, or Tibet, then ART will assist you with all the formalities!

                      Physical Condition And Experience Requirements

The Mardi Himal Trek is normal trekking of the Annapurna region, it is possible to trek with a basic level of fitness, a good training plan before your Mardi Himal Trek trip will make it that much more enjoyable. It doesn’t require any climbing skills. We have seen many different ages of travelers completing this trek like old, young, overweight, and underweight, and they all very much appreciate the journey as a non-technical trek that does not require crampons, walking poles, oxygen cylinders, ropes, and technical equipment.  But our company will provide you with warm-down jackets and sleeping bags if you do not have your own. A normal ABC trek is accessible to most trekkers who have some genus of fitness level and decent drive with a lot of stamina to last two weeks in the cold weather in the mountain.

if you could convenience yourself to take some normal pre-training courses like daily physical exercises, jogging, running, climbing the staircase and walking down, cycling, swimming and hitting the gym, etc, that would greatly help to accomplish the journey more easily.

                      Accommodation during the Trek

Alpine Ramble Treks will be accommodated in the best hotel-like 3 stars categories with good facilities, WIFI, Hot Shower, and AC room with the best breakfast services on the selection in Kathmandu, and all Accommodations are provided on a twin-sharing basis. All the facilities during the Mardi Himal Trek are not the same as in Kathmandu, but they are still very pleasant and suitable. Do not expect everything to be high-level standards in the mountain. Alpine Ramble Treks would be glad to ensure the attached bathroom in every possible place even in the Annapurna region in advance booking, in some places; you have to compromise in sharing a bathroom at a high altitudes area because there is no room with an attached bath have being built at this elevations area.

NOTE: Standers Hotels in Kathmandu, like 4-5 stars, will be provided on your request with the extra cost basis

                      Meals

The Mardi Himal Trek is a well-established trekking route in the Nepal Himalayas where you can get numerous trekking lodges along the way in the whole journey, and basic meals are available in the trekking lodge on this route. The meals are served by our company in an inclusive way, which is included in this Mardi Himal Trek program. Basically, the foods are provided in the same tea house where you stay overnight and there are no outside foods allowed according to the rule and regulations of the local community but you can simply take the normal snacks, water and drinking stuffs from outside as you wish which are allowed. In order to complete the 5/6 Days base camp, food is one of the most important factors that you really need to hike in the Himalayas. The meal on this trek is very convenient and fresh except for meat items. Usually, we take our breakfast and dinner at the same lodge where we stay and for the lunch, our trekking guide will be chosen every day at the best place possible along the way,

Food During the trek, you will have full options to select your preferred meals items from the menu, which are provided by the local tea houses; the Menu offers verities of ethnic cuisines foods as well as western styles meals including Sherpa stew, Fresh vegetable items, Rara noodles, different soups, handmade bread items, rice items, spaghetti, pizza, eggs, potatoes items, Apple pie, Dal Bhat and various of drinking like Black tea, lemon tea, Hot chocolates, Ginger tea, Milk coffee/tea, green tea, black coffee, Lemon ginger tea are available on the menu in this trek. The meals are quite more surprising on this trek than on other trekking routes Like Everest and Langtang regions of Nepal, all selected items from the menu of the lodge will be fresh, hygienic, and tasty. In some places, there are non-veg item meals available however we do not recommend taking these meat items in the Annapurna region as they are not hygienic and healthy during the trek. Fresh and healthy meals during the trek like Dal Bhat, Vegetable items, and soups items ( Garlic soup, potato soup, onion soup with the food) are recommended, which are prepared by the local supplement and do not store for a long period of time to serve it.

Note: The water is available everywhere during the ABC trek, which costs around 1-3 dollars per liter of bottles, or you can also use the normal tap water for free, but water purification pills are required to filter. And we would like you to take a separate proper bottle for hot water reason because cold water cannot be fit every time in the high altitude area and it’s too cold.

                      Passport and Visa

All clients must have a valid passport with at least six months prior validity from the return date  Nepalese visas can be obtained from the immigration office or Consulate in your country or arrival at Kathmandu Airport.
